Lab Moves, Intern Armies

05-08-2007

Been pretty busy the last few weeks, too busy to get any down time to work on the site sadly. This is due to two main reasons.
The first one is that I get migraines, big mother fucker headaches that pretty much wipe out an entire day (and they are the nice ones) with visits to the big white phone, the darkened bedroom and the freezer for ice. Also, a recent little yap with a college mate's brother (who happens to be a brain doc) pointed out that the dosage of drugs I was on had sort of gotten me addicted to them. Long story short, I had to go cold turkey to stop having the constant headache I found myself with. But now I have made the crazy plan of not taking any meds anymore, because they had stopped working a long time ago anyway on the prescribed dose (hence the bumping it up myself). So coming home in the evenings from work with a massive brain pain left little time to do anything other than sleep, then it was up and back at it the next day. Or in the case of the weekends, bye bye Saturday. Which left Sunday for all my other chores that had built up during the week, ergo no writing and no coding for the site.

Ah well, cry me a river I guess.

Reason number two is that work was really hectic the last two weeks. Due to various ins and outs of the working world we had to move our computer lab (couple of hundred machines) from our current lab up one floor to our new one. Which meant myself and the lab admin were in there doing twelve hours a day five days a week getting machines ready to be shifted, sorting out where network ports and plugs should be placed, stopping test lines so that certain servers could be moved without causing America to scream in panic. So we had all that fun, along with trying to fit our lab into a much smaller area in the new lab, plus the fun of trying to be a bit more creative with the placement of network hubs, etc. Overall it was migraine madness.

Then last week became even worse because while I tried to get network cables remade, servers and systems back up, and chase down electricians because they hadn't wired half our plugs, I have the groups resident idiot complaining about stupid things (such as the slowness of the work) while he just sits in his cube and does sweet fuck all to help. Now, admittedly, the guy is such a retard that his idea of helping is to put in fiber optic cables upside down and give them a gentle punch to make them fit. Overall, how I haven't murdered him this week is a mystery.

But one thing that would have made the whole lab move that bit quicker, an army of interns. Little helper minions to run around and recable things rather than have me do it all. Ah to have an army of interns, then I would rule the cubicles with an iron fist.

Site news, since I have decided to take a week off to recover from the move and try and get my old jester mobile fixed (she doesn't like the battery these days) I will try and get at least a prototype comment page up and running. Watch this space, or the menu to the left to be more precise.
