System Updates and Late Night Headaches

Even though I did say in the last post that I was going to get some more time to work on this site, sadly it was not meant to be. First things first, work just kept getting more and more hectic and when I came home in the evenings I was just too shattered to work on this. Then Mandriva 2008 was released and I generally do a full system update when the new release comes out, with only minor little ones between releases or if something new is on the interweb and it would make a little project work better. Anyroad, the update went a little smoothly with one or two kinks. To get the 3D desktop features working I needed to do some config file editing, even though the 2007 release just worked out of the box without any hassle.

The only real problem that cropped up was when I setup apache and php on the system. Since php 4 has been End of Lifed (or at least has a date) Mandriva 2008 no longer supports it so I had to move up to php 5. No big deal, except for some reason all my code for the Bauble failed to work on the localhost. Then again when I did get the code to work, the images all failed to load. I have no idea why, and will look into it further when I get time, but all I had to do was save the files (all files) under a new name, delete the old file and rename back again. Short story long, I can finally test and edit locally before updating again. Only thing is rants and picture pages are still a little buggy so just be warned.
