New Gallery & Plus The Eircom Rant

02-12-2007

Have uploaded the new Gallery stuff now, tested it and it works. I'll put up more pictures during the next few weeks. Go and have a gander.

So one thing that I forgot to mention about the move was the adventure that occured with getting broadband setup. The local phone company, or one of them, is Eircom. They are a bunch of robbing bastards that have to be exterminated and soon. Not all of them mind you. Just the ones that manage accounts or the ones that do any of the wiring and cabling. That lot should be round up and shot with balls of their own shite.

The place that we moved into is in an old-ish part of town and for my job broadband is something of a requirement. Plus the old computer geek in me is needing the broadband. Music and movies don't download so well on an old dial connection.

So the deal was that we, me and the housemate, knew wer were moving into the house about a month in advance. We got onto Eircom and asked them to install the broadband about a month beforehand, meaning when we moved in the little blinking light on the router should have come on. But of course Eircom being Eircom couldn't handle a three week advance request to do their job. So there was no broadband and no T.V., making reading the only source of entertainment. Plus our first bill was already in the house, the line rental and activation charge. Never worry about Eircom not getting their money, so long as you don't look too hard for the service they claim to provide.

Anyways I could rant on and on about the many phonecalls that went back and forth during the week but the main purpose of the rant is to get across how Eircom are robbing bastards.

The general gist of the conversations was that broadband was always going to be active the next day. Lo and behold it never was! So after three days of the bullshit lies we got onto somebody that could give us some proper answers. By this stage I had figured that not only was broadband not in place, the house didn't even have a working phoneline. We informed the idiot on the other end about this and she just confirmed the information, relaying it back as if it was something we diddn't know. So then things started to move along. We got told, that at best, somebody could come to repair the line was Dec 19th. That was, while not ideal, at least something concrete we could work with. Until my housemate, in a burst of inspiration, asked if we were going to be charged line rental and broadband fees for the months of Nov and Dec despite the fact that the service wasn't even in place.

The shocked answer from the Eircom end of "But of course, sure why would we not charge you?" was met with much verbal attacks. I mean these people actually saw no problem with charging a customer for two months line rental and two months broadband coverage when neither thing was being supplied. After the torrent of abuse and threats of managers being called in the Eircom monkey changed their tune and said that everything would sorted by Friday and could we please go away so that she could crawl out of her pit of shame.

What's the moral of the story? When dealing with Eircom make sure you don't just hang up after they fob you off with some repair date set in the future. Because they will get their money one way or the other, regardless of what you are actually paying for. Hurl abuse down the wires at them and threaten them in large portions and suddenly you will get a much better service.

Robbing bastards.
