"Lost" Interest

04-03-2008

So I watch that show called "Lost". I know, it never seems to end and has more plot threads running through it than the plan of attack that was America's War on Terror, but still I have strived to watch it. I am not a huge fan of the show, I could easily stop watching it. Given how some of the seasons have gone, such as half of season three, where nothing worth watching actually happens and the plot just drags along because the guys know it is a money spinner I guess I should have stopped before season two started. But it was good for a while and has had some interesting stories during it's life.

Almost as entertaining as watching the show is reading the mad theories that crop up online while people try to figure things out. We are talking about a show that has been designed to be more confusing than a ten sided rubics cube (yes it wouldn't be a cube but that's not the point) and yet folk will analyze nearly every frame of the show looking for what they think are clues. Some of the ideas that popped up over the years were good, but got shot down by the writers. This is understandable, they know more than the fans so they know that they can be right or wrong. But the reason I have lost interest in the show is because a little over a year and a half ago a fan posted his theory.

The show was about time travel.

Now, time travel is by no means a new idea to sci-fi story telling. Nor was it such a bad idea for the show that is Lost. But the writers went online, on there offical blogs and sites, and said, 100%, that the show was NOT about time travel. They swore that everything on the show could be explained using actual science from today and that time travel was NOT what the show was about.

Then in season 4 they have a guy that can talk to ghosts and somebody else who time travels. Well FUCK YOU! The ghost thing was bad enough, since science cannot be used to explain how a guy can apparently talk to the dead. But the time travel? If you are going to come down so strongly against a fan theory, only to actually use the fan theory, that makes you a big bastard really. I am all for stringing the viewer along while you drag the show out forever in the ratings bid that cashes in money, but just because one guy figured it all out BEFORE you got to tell us doesn't mean you can try and play smoke and daggers with us. I would have continued to watch the show if they had said nothing, let the theory flop around on the internet for a while and then just have it happen in the show. But because they tried to be too clever with a show that isn't all that clever to begin with means that the jester is signing off. Show the fans a little respect after all. If it wasn't for them watching you your show would never have made it past season one, yet you treat them like idiots because they showed some smarts? Shame on you Lost guys, you need to find your way.
