Crap Gear

02-03-2009

So, as promised, the post that foraging for food delayed.

Yesterday I collected a 1996 Ford Fiesta for an upcoming road trip that myself and two college friends are going on. The birth of this trip was as follows.

Before Christmas we met up for a seasonal pint and discussed things from many topics. One thing that was mentioned was "Top Gear" (if you don't know about this show go google it) and the road trips they go on where they have to buy a car for a set amount. In general these trips have a budget of about one thousand sterling and the cars are in working order. But we three thought we would be able to do a similar job for under one hundred euro.

Thus was the birth of Crap Gear.

The plan is we buy a car for one hundred quid or less, with some rules in place as to the exact type of vehicles not allowed and the likes, and will drive in two days from the Southern most point of Ireland to the Northern most point. To make the trip even more worthwhile (aside from the fun factor) we are going to try and raise money for Cystic Fibrosis Ireland, or at least awareness of the Charity. Any money left over from the budget was allowed be spent on repairs, any money after that was given to the charity. We will probably go and get donations from folk as well.

As of now I have a car that cost me nothing, meaning the charity has one hundred quid already going towards it. I don't think it even needs any repairs done. I will try and get some pictures of it up on the site in the next week or so.

We even plan on making a video of the trip (happening in May) so when that happens I will post a link to it in the Videos section.

What is funky is the amount of interest we generated while searching for the cars. A lot of folk are interested in joining the cause. So next year we will try and organise it again but for a wider audience.

No doubt one of us will break down at the top of a mountain, but if it was easy it wouldn't be fun.

Also some site news: I plan on taking down the comments section in the near future and redoing it entirely. There will be a lot of testing done before I announce it to the world but if the comments aren't there some days you know why.
