The Comedy Co-op

27-03-2009

So my gig never went ahead last night, which is a bit of a bummer to be honest. Not that I was relying on it for anything other than stage time and practice, plus I was flat out exhausted as well. But it still would have been cool for it to go ahead.

When your audience is made up purely of the other acts going on for the night you know you are in trouble. Geo, the guy that runs the club, said that if we all wanted we could go on but that it was up to us. So instead we sat around for a bit drinking.

Which was when this idea cropped up.

As noted before my favorite Friday night haunt has shut up shop for good. This is only slightly annoying but still annoying. Mainly because Friday night I got to mingle with other comedians, watch some comedy live, get the odd last minute gig and not just bum around waiting for a plan to form. Without such a wonderful place Fridays risk becoming boring again.

So me and another comedian got to talking. I had toyed with the idea before of opening my own comedy club. Just for a laugh (pun intended) but never really put much thought into it. With the closure of the main club the plan started to form again.

The other comedian had been thinking about this as well. Not opening a club but how to run one. At the end of the day we are all rookies and noobies. Some of us are trying to get big, get a name for ourselves, others are just doing it as a hobby. None of us are good enough to have egos where we walk off stage or get paid for the slots.

His idea was this: the comedian is looking for stage time so he should have to pay for that time. Payment as in cold hard cash. To get out of paying for the gig you need to bring people along, say four at least. Then you get the slot for free. This would mean crowds should be there rather than the hit and miss nights we used to have.

Paying the support and headline act would be gone for good. The headline act maybe, but definitely not the support. Some nights in the old club the support act was dreadful, yet still got paid for it. That madness needs to stop.

Even as I write this rant I have two others interested in helping out. Two none comics that enjoy comedy.

This might just end up being another stupid idea of mine that comes screaming into life.
