Carlsberg Comedy Chemist Festival

02-06-2009

So, in all honesty, that last post was just a quick testing of new code for the site. The new code for the rants section had to be tested live online before I was sure it worked. Everything went okay, so that is that.

Now onto this actual post.

There was a long weekend just gone and myself and the wee northern girl that I am seeing these days (also referred to as my girlfriend) decided to get out of Dublin for a bit and enjoy ourselves.

Her idea was to head down to the Kilkenny Comedy Festival, also called The Cats Laugh, to see what it was like. Part investigation of the gigs to see if I would be able to take a stab at it sometime, part weekend away together, part excuse to see some comedy.

My idea came about after we had agreed to head to Kilkenny. Some mates from college were going camping in Kerry and the pair of us got asked to come down.

The plan was formed, we would do both. Which worked out even better because the weather was just so brilliant over the weekend.

Kilkenny was actually a great bit of fun. We got down early enough to enjoy the sunshine. Kilkenny castle was the perfect spot to go and flake out in. It has a wide open green space with nothing to worry about but hanging out. After booking into a B&B for the night we went for a stroll around the town itself and bumped into a few of the comedians that I know from the Dublin circuit. We settled on heading to one of their gigs and that was the plan of attack for the night.

One hilarious thing about Kilkenny is the amount of Chemists and Pharmacies they have. Also the distinct lack of ATMs that they have. On one street alone we passed at least six Pharmacies while looking for an ATM.

Six!

In a town that couldn't possibly need more than three. As we meandered around the town we finally found an ATM. After passing another seven Pharmacies.

I am not making this shit up. The town has something like five Pharmacies for every person that lives there. With two working ATMs.

We even started to take pictures of ourselves in front of the Pharmacies to have a collection, but the locals gave us funny looks after a while so that plan didn't continue.

The camping in Kerry, while not sticking to the original plan, was just as awesome. Campfire slagging, beach BBQ and general all round relaxing. Nothing more could be asked for out of a weekend away from The Big Smoke.

All in all I can happily say with hand on heart or one of those religious books you swear on that it was the best Bank Holiday Weekend that I have ever had.
