Bit Miffed

08-06-2009

Mainly because right now I am sitting in the office at eight twenty, having had to leave my mother's house where I was enjoying some family time and a nice cooked meal. Why am I sitting in the office? Because my job sucks the biggest donkey balls you ever will see.

At the moment I am covering for somebody in work. I have covered for this person before, but it has been just over a year since the last time I did their job. As such my skill set on this topic is a little rusty, because if you don't do something on a semi-regular basis you are not going to remember it from one year to the next.

But not to worry, because when I agreed to cover I was told that everything had been done before she went and all I would have to do was be there in case the worst thing happened.

Which it did.

About six hours after she had gone home.

So on Friday I ended up hounding people in Prague for things to be submitted before six because it was Friday and I am not one of those tech heads that lives to work. I have a social life. I have normal friends. I have a life outside of this job that never rewards but will punish at the drop of a hat.

So Friday went fairly smoothly.

Then I just happened to check my work email over the weekend. There was more work that needed doing, but I was not working the weekend. The girl that I was covering got into that habit and now it is expected. Maybe if I was paid more I would have done it, but not on what I am earning now.

So I did that stuff on Monday (today) and zipped it all up and away we go. No problems on my end, I do my extra hour of work and head off to the mother's for the dinner.

Just as I finish dinner somebody from work rings me saying people stateside are looking for me.

There is no proper Internet at mam's home and my laptop wasn't playing nice with connecting to work. So I had to drop everything, drop my social life, to come into work, into this office that slowly but surely I am starting to hate, and do a job that, for the life of me, I can't figure out why somebody stateside couldn't have done just as easily given the emergency.

I have two voice mails on my desk phone and a horde of emails about things ASAP and URGENT.

God almighty I have never wanted to move jobs more in my life.

And after it is all done and everything is sorted and I mail America to say "Hey, sorry, was at my mother's but came back to the office to fix this for ya'll". After that I get an email that says that I should "check in" before going home first, then sorry afterwards.

I dunno about anybody else, but if I had just learned that I had pulled somebody away from spending sometime with their mother the FIRST thing I would say would be sorry for that. The SECOND would be sorry again. Then maybe afterwards point out that in future they could drop an email to say they are going home. Finished off with more sorries.

It appears to survive in this tech head company I have to forgo a social life, forget basic manners, and enjoy doing nothing other than work or thinking about work.

Newsflash: it ain't going to happen.
