I think I might be addicted

09-06-2009

One thing that I have always found odd about things like Facebook and Twitter is the requirement on a person to constantly be keeping their status up to date. The wall on Facebook is fine, if a friend leaves you a comment you reply otherwise you just let it sit there gathering Internet dust. That is grand.

But then you have that "What I am doing now" thing that is on the homepage. Your status, your little blurb about the current state of things in your life.

That always seemed a little odd to me. Mainly because you get some really mad ones like "Just had tea" or "Can't wait to go for lunch". It is the same with Twitter, both Twitter and Facebook Status are funny things that don't seem to really serve a purpose.

Yet I am, despite my views on both, clearly addicted to them.

I did rant before about never going to Twitter and yet now I have an account (or at least The Bauble does) and despite claiming to see no real purpose to having it, that account does get updated every few days.

The Facebook Status is just as mysterious, something that I never really used and yet in the last twenty four hours alone have updated twice.

Obviously I will jump onto any old bandwagon that I see fit to jump onto. Hypocritical? Little bit maybe.

Although as I am typing this rant I have come to one conclusion about Twitter, it does have a use.

See my great interest, my ideal job, would be to somehow tell stories to people. As I grew up this medium was comics (enter geek jokes now). I loved to draw and comics seemed to combine elements of art and story telling together.

I still have hopes of getting some sort of webcomic going on the site. I really do. Honest. It is still a work in progress.

Once I get the actual work (the one that sucks) not so much in progress anymore.

But I digress (sure what's new). I follow a few webcomics online. The artwork is always impressive and the stories are really very good. I found out the other day that two of the artists I really am impressed by have Twitter accounts.

So, to sum up, Twitter does have an actual use beyond just telling people you had a slice of toast. You can follow creative individuals such as those guys and be aware of any new and interesting art projects they are working on.

Now if I could just figure out a similar use for Facebook Status and I would be able to sleep a little better at night.
