Epic Drive Home

18-06-2009

Those that visit the site regular like will know that a few months ago I had a very long car journey home after work one night. Something in the region of hours.

Last night I had a similar experience, although this time there was no snow to make it a little more interesting.

Apparently at four o'clock yesterday afternoon there was an accident on the quays of Dublin at one of the pedestrian bridges. It turns out that a person was killed from being hit by a bus. This in turned caused the entire city to enter full gridlock stage. I have never seen traffic this bad in the city before, either from my years driving or the years I used to get the bus. It was actually totally locked solid.

My normal route home was packed and some bus decided to do some very dangerous driving due to get frustrated at the traffic lights changing and no movement.

I wound up doing some rat runs through the city that I wasn't sure would work, including driving down a road that I have never been on before because I figured it would lead to more familiar territory. It worked, I somehow managed to find a lot of routes that were entirely traffic free.

In other news my webcam was giving me hassle again last night. Added to the fun was the microphone stopped working on the laptop as well. I have had to use an external mic on my laptop because I never had the internal one working, if I even have an internal one. But last night it just stopped.

At first I thought it had physically broken, it being a good few years old, but testing it on another machine showed that wasn't the case at all.

So after about an hour of tech head messing I managed to get the webcam working again, permanently this time, while the mic was only fixed this morning.

Least I got the webcam sorted last night. Really needed that sorted last night.

Might even document how I did that, just so I don't have to figure it out from basics everytime.

Of course my plans from last night where then thrown out the window a little. Getting home late I wound up heading to see my friend's newly purchased house (god we are getting old if we are buying houses) and then got back and tinkered with the stupid webcam hassle. Of the list I mentioned yesterday the only thing I actually got around to doing was writing some website code for any freelance work I manage to get.

In the grand scheme of things last night was in no way wasted, just not planned.
