Where The Site Stands

25-08-2009

Well now.

Last night I managed to get a good few solid hours work done on the site. Which has resulted in many wonderful things happening.

For starters I downloaded and installed Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) to see how the site looked on it. Turns out there wasn't all that much work to be done to make it look like it does in Firefox. In fact, by adding in three little lines of code into the background file for the site I was able to get IE8 to look and behave exactly like Firefox. Right down to the menu.

Onto the menu. The menu now has the "Guestbook" back in place. If you move your mouse over it you will see that it now drops down to reveal further options "Guestbook" related. This is a feature I have wanted to have since the site was first born all those years ago, but due to IE5, IE6 and IE7 not playing nice and proper I had to opt for other methods rather than code it perfectly in Firefox and then come up with dirty hacks for the others. The good news is that the menu also works in IE8 as it does in Firefox.

The bad news is that it doesn't work at all in IE7. In fact the three lines of code that make IE8 work brilliantly totally mess up IE7. Which is now a pain in the ass. It also means that without those lines, the menu in IE7 doesn't drop down (to be honest the menu doesn't even exist) so that is more work in the future.

Overall I am nearly completed with the site upgrade. All that is left is the Chronicles (which will be a simple job since it is basically the same as the Rants) and the creation of a Random page for a few bits that I want on it.

Once all that work is done I will then get back to the subscription and RSS feed that I wanted to add before the upgrade work began.

Sometimes The Bauble is a full time job, I should pay myself more.
