Comedy of Competition

27-01-2010

As usually happens when it comes to me and doing comedy gigs, or getting to go to some of the small clubs that have become a second home to me over the last few years, I have let other things get in the way.

My last gig was in October for crying out loud, that's like three months ago. Even with my lack of time concept that is far too long to not have had a gig.

Not that I am trying to make being a comedian my full time job or anything, but if you are to class it as a hobby you need to have a few more gigs under your belt.

I haven't sat down and written new material in a few months (although I do have some new stuff that just hasn't been tested yet) and that boils down to time. If it isn't work getting in the way and having me wrecked at night it's my weekends disappearing in a blur of doing everything else other than stealing five minutes to write some material. Or something cropping up during the week that means I have no time to do what I need to do.

Basically I need to start telling people to bog off so that I can write material. Or have every second weekend free from the needs of others demanding something (mainly my time) from me.

So I decided to go and do something a tad stupid. I went and asked to go into Comedy Dublin's contest for 2010, starting on Feb 16th. I don't know if any slots are left for me to nab but if anything this is a reason to focus some time on comedy now. I will need at least 7 minutes of material for it and will have to practice my routine a lot since I am going to aim for an entire new set.

Be a good motivator if nothing else. When I have a confirmed (fingers crossed) date I will no doubt be drafting everyone and his wife to attend the gig.

After all, what use is entering a contest if you can't bring along a crowd to vote for you?
