Unto The Bitter End

14-06-2010

Right, so, the Semi Final of the Comedy Dublin 2010 Contest was on last night. I ain't going to lie, I wasn't going in with the highest of hopes for my survival into the next round. Of the six acts on I had never heard of two of them, but knew from others in comedy that they both ran their own comedy clubs. To me that sort of signaled that they must be pretty good.

Having come tops in the Underground Contest two weeks ago a logical person would have figured that his set was strong, good enough to get him through to the next round. But as always I started to think about how it could be improved and tweaked and tuned and that led to a spiral in confidence for the material.

I figured that, at worst, I would get the runner up slot and be in the Final if one of the other guys had to drop out. With that attitude in my mind I went off to the gig to see what the Gods had in store.

The venue was in the downstairs, back where I originally saw it many moons ago. It's the sort of venue I like, the basement room where comedy happens. I feel a bit more relaxed in those sort of clubs.

The crowd wasn't too bad in size, mainly made up of people that had come to support one of the acts but there is no harm in that. If a person brings along a mate and doesn't influence how that mate votes that means there is an extra vote floating around for somebody else. People that bring along mates and say "Vote for me and the worst act on the night" are just doing themselves and others a disservice. As the lady friend pointed out to me afterwards anybody that had come along to support me had also voted for either the top spot on the night (congrats again Adam) or the third placer (Joe you singing genius you).

But how did I get on? Well, through some fluke, I managed to get into the Final, coming in second place. A yap with the judges afterwards seemed to hint that my routine was good enough to get some high marks from them, which is always good to hear.

To be honest I didn't quite believe it myself when it got announced. I'd heard the runner-up slot being called out, realised it wasn't my name, and thought "Oh shit, I didn't even place".

So there you have it, my second time in the contest and not only have I done better than last time, done better than that again, I have even done better than that again. Will I win it? Who knows, maybe maybe not, but just being in the Final of the whole thing is a big enough win for me now at this stage.
