Loath To Do It

21-09-2010

It's happening again. I'm working on this new site for somebody and as I go through the code and write the new bits and bobs I am streamlining it a lot. Which is increasing the temptation to do similar to The Bauble.

Feature Creep you are a harsh mistress.

Just as I build up the files and learn from my past mistakes I am thinking "Yep, that would be nice to have in The Bauble." or "Sure that would make things easier to handle if I do a bigger change later.". I know I have one or two bits that I want to add in for sure, but the thought of doing it and messing up sections of the site is the only thing that is keeping me from going down that dark and winding Creep road.

Then again, what's the harm in one or two little bits, right? Who would even know?

One thing I have done is deleted a whole host of old files that are in no way needed by the site anymore. Back when I first wrote The Bauble I hadn't done a lot of websites, or at least ones of this type. Non-static ones. So I had files for nearly everything before the massive overhaul about two or three years back. Sadly, being something of a hoarder by nature, I never deleted the old files as I wrote the new ones. Merely renamed them to "old-something" just in case.

Which made updating tiny sections of the site really fun as you tried to remember just what file called what to do what to whom.

Sometimes my mother reckons the things I do on computers is akin to magic. After looking at some of the code on this site I'd have to agree, because based on all my learning this thing shouldn't work at all. :D

Funny you should say that, since most of the time any Feature Creep here means better things for your site :P
