So Long Megan

12-08-2011

I have a large dislike of the NCT. Mainly because, as anyone who doesn't work for them will tell you, they are a shower of con-artists that make up reasons to generate money.

Yes you could argue that the roads are safer because these "death trap" cars are failing and being put off the road, but that statement isn't backed up by facts sadly. There are forums all over the web that complain about the NCT and how it hasn't done anything for safety. That it is just a money spinner.

I'd lean in the money spinner direction myself. I've had a few dealings with the NCT over the years and many is the time my car has failed for something a mechanic said wasn't broken or passed with flying colours despite a noticeable issue with the car.

My current motor, Megan the Megane, is due her second NCT a few months ago. I figured I might as well go, four months late, and get it done. To make this a smooth sailing operation I figured I would go and get a pre-NCT to fix the kinks.

This has turned out to be a plan of action that I now greatly regret. Thankfully my mechanic is one of those lads that has his brain in the right place. Rather than go ahead and do the repair work and just bill me he rang me to tell me the bad news.

Such very, very bad news.

In order to get my car NCT worthy I would have to spend the best part of two thousand euro on it.

The car cost me three thousand euro three years ago.

I like driving the car but not to that sort of tune.

So, alas, she is going to be sent out to pasture. To rust in peace or brighten up a field while unruly youths drink around the flames. Either option is possible at this stage. Car hunting is back on the cards.

The bit that is also annoying is that a quick look online for cars show ones with 90K on the clock, even 110K, are being sold for 6 to 7 grand. Megan has 81K on her at the moment. Ah the nature of the Rip-off Republic.

Poxy fecking NCT :D Guess that means the scoreboard is Jester 2 NCT 1.

This displeases me :|

R.I.P. Megan, you provided us with many "I told you not to buy a French car" moments. Have a look at the GB car market (the NI market is prob inflated by the ROI market). You can pick up amazing BMWs, Mercs and everything inbetween with feck all mileage for less than 10k + ROI VRT

Hmm English/nordie car - with the amount of salt they put on their roads... ...dunno if I fancy it. While I'm going to resist the urge to bask in my (well deserved I reckon) told you so moment I gotta ask why you'd send your car for a pre-nct. They're just scams. Shove it through the nct first - see what they pick up on - thats the best pre-nct you can get and cheap too!

Welcome Harrison!

@franyhi: Oh I'd say we're about level on "I told you so" moments when it comes to cars but when it comes to other things I'm in the lead.

@Ronnie: The North doesn't salt as bad/much as the UK landmass does. The pre-NCT was part of a service I was long overdue for, two birds one stone. I usually do it the other way, let them fail me and fix what it fails on.

@blue_jester "in the lead"? ...more like "on the leash"

@blue_jester was there meant to be an insult there? I think my hangover must be clouding my ability to get 'humour'. I thought you'd only shared moderator access on #halfbakedpotatoes because I nearly got on to @Ronnie to see if we were, in fact, conversing with you and not someone who had left their humour in the jar beside their balls...

@fanyhi: Ah Fran, how I've missed these "insults" :)
