Pre-gig

29-09-2011

It's been a little over a year since my last gig and tonight marks me getting back up on stage, mic in hand, trying to make people laugh.

What could possibly go wrong?

Have I spent the last week writing new material? You bet your ass I haven't, down that path "dying on your arse" lies. Instead I tweaked an old set to fit into the allotted time and will run with that.

Thankfully the soup has, for once, proved to be very useful. A year without uttering a single word from any of my material and I have had no hassle getting the jokes back into my head. I can prattle them all off in exactly seven minutes.

Meaning that I will probably last about five on stage as I rush through them all.

What is nice is that despite being off stage for so long I don't have those very first gig nerves.

I remember when I started doing the comedy as a hobby and that first gig. I had packed the room out with a rent-a-crowd of friends for moral support. I was pondering on the night, minutes before going on stage, why the hell I was doing this crazy thing. Just because you can make a few of your mates laugh the odd time doesn't automatically mean you can get an entire room of strangers laughing as well.

But thankfully that gig went well and I got hooked doing gigs.

In a way the lady friend noticed more than I did that I was missing the thrill of the stage. The heart pounding terror of not knowing whether or not your punchline would land. She noticed so much that she was pushing me for a few months to get back into it.

Based on how tonight goes I may or may not take it back up again. It all depends really. If I feel the crowd received the old material well then I will once again hit the comedy drawing board and come up with some new material. Maybe even make a good go at it this time instead of doing the odd gig here and there.

Or I might just hold this as a one of return and say no more about it.

Hell I might very well die on my arse tonight.

That's the great thing about performing at a comedy gig: anything can happen. Fingers crossed that the anything is success, right?

For anybody who hasn't been brought up to speed on the where and when of tonight's gig it is as follows (Lifted straight from the Club's Facebook page):

TOM THE BEAR O'MAHONEY is the most muscular and fit comedians in the country, who as well as working on his comedy muscles, also drinks a lot of that whey protein and looks at himself in the mirror a lot. Tom will MC like a man possessed (of a microphone)

DEREK POWER is a local legend who will be bringing his Lucan perspective. He aint the tamest comedian ever, which we love here.

WILL LYNCH is one of the most beautiful an Jewish-looking comedians who will be making his Cavern debut.

See that bit about me? See it? No pressure like :P
